The United States President, Donald Trump, has reacted to the news of American singer and songwriter, Taylor Swift, announcing her engagement to NFL star, Travis Kelce.
The 35-year-old Swift shared a photo of Kelce, also 35 years old, kneeling in a garden decorated with white and pink roses under an arch. The news quickly spread across social media and news outlets.
Fox News even interrupted coverage of Trump’s cabinet meeting to report the engagement.
After the three-hour meeting, Trump was asked for his reaction. The US president, who has at times criticized Swift, however offered congratulations.
“I think he’s a great player. I think he’s a great guy, and I think that she’s a terrific person, so I wish them a lot of luck,” he said.
Trump’s views on Swift have shifted over the years. He once praised her as “fantastic,” but later said he liked her music “25 per cent less” after she endorsed Democrats in 2018.
When she backed Kamala Harris for president in 2024, Trump posted “I hate Taylor Swift!” on Truth Social.
At the 2024 Super Bowl, Swift appeared on the Jumbotron to cheer for Kelce and the Kansas City Chiefs but was met with boos.
Trump, also in the stadium, posted afterward: “The only one that had a tougher night than the Kansas City Chiefs was Taylor Swift. She got booed out of the Stadium. Maga is very unforgiving!”
Swift has been outspoken about Trump as well, calling his presidency an “autocracy” and accusing him of relying on “the dirtiest tricks” in politics.
