Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid narrowly avoided danger when a bullet struck his office at the team’s practice facility in May 2024. According to reports, the shot came within 15 feet of his desk while he was working late that night.

The Incident

The Kansas City Star reported that the shooting occurred around 12:15 a.m. on May 4, 2024. Reid was in his office when a bullet pierced the window and lodged in a wall between the bathroom and his office door. Police later confirmed that two additional rounds hit the building—one striking an air conditioning unit outside and another hitting the floor above Reid’s office.

Overnight security first noticed the damage after hearing a noise and spotting what appeared to be a bullet hole in the window. Officers arrived shortly after and began investigating.

Police Response

A Kansas City Police Department spokesperson told PEOPLE:

“No one was struck, and there were no injuries associated with the incident. However, the case is being investigated as aggravated assault because the building was occupied at the time of the bullet coming through the window.”

Authorities believe the gunfire came from outside the facility. So far, no arrests have been made, and investigators are awaiting forensic results to determine where the shots originated.

Random or Targeted?

Both the police and the Chiefs organization currently believe the incident was random and not directed at Reid or the team.

“Based on investigation to this point, there is no indication this was a targeted incident at any person or organization,” police said in a statement.

An insider also told USA Today Sports that the team considers the shooting an isolated act of violence.

Although the incident was initially kept quiet, reports indicate the Chiefs have since taken extra security precautions, including the installation of bulletproof windows in Reid’s office.
